Sitfit helps wheelchair users, and the elderly prevent seating-acquired pressure ulcers by reducing buttocks deformation and increasing tissue perfusion

The Challenge

Pressure ulcers affect millions of people across the world. In England alone, the NHS spends £4 million per day on the treatment and prevention of pressure ulcers, equating to around 5% of its annual budget. Seating-acquired pressure ulcer affect wheelchair users and the elderly in care homes. In the UK alone there are approximately 1.2 million wheelchair users and half a million people in care home, with this number rising due to the aging population

The Opportunity

Sitfit aims to prevent pressure ulcers by reducing tissue distortion, and increasing tissue oxygenation during sitting. Gentle pressure is applied to the side of the seated buttocks, pressing the tissue bulge back under the bony prominences, the highest risk areas. This reduces dangerous shear and blood vessel occlusion that can lead to pressure ulcers.

Many current prevention methods on the market lack clinical evidence to support their efficacy. Devices often focus on reducing the interface pressure between the person and the chair, however there is a growing body of literature that suggest interface pressure is not a good predictor of pressure ulcer incidence. Instead, sitfit has used transcutaneous oximetry to measure oxygen in the tissue to support our device.

Traction

Part of the 2026 WE Innovate cohort, sitfit was also accepted onto Innovate UK’s ICURe Discover program to conduct customer discovery and validation work.
