The Challenge

Synthetic colourants used across textiles, cosmetics, food, and other consumer products are fossil-derived, resource-intensive, and major contributors to industrial pollution. Their production and application consume huge water, energy, and chemicals, creating significant carbon emissions, wastewater, and health concerns. Industry urgently needs scalable, high-performance, bio-based alternatives compatible with existing manufacturing.

The Opportunity

Brilliant Dyes has developed a scalable platform to produce high-performance algae-derived biochromatic materials that are compatible with existing manufacturing processes. Our proprietary extraction, purification, and formulation technologies enable sustainable, cost-effective colour solutions with lower environmental impact, offering a practical alternative to fossil-derived colourants for textiles, cosmetics, and food applications.

The Venture

Business Model

B2B: For large-scale dye production through license, consultancy, and tech transfer;
B2C: Small-scale product sales from a pilot plant facility (2028 onwards) targeting high-end cosmetics and food industries in Europe and the USA.

Competition

Current natural dye producers are dependent on carbon-intensive fermentation of GMOs or slow-growing plant-based processes, which are not scalable and costly. Our algae-based process uses naturally abundant photosynthetic microalgae and cyanobacteria, with a low-energy, carbon-negative, and highly scalable process. This innovation has the potential to disrupt the global dyes market.

Traction

Brilliant Dyes has secured 6 Letters of Intent, received interest from 50+ global brands, and completed three laboratory validation trials, with paid commercial pilots planned over the next 6–12 months. We have also secured ~£750k in non-dilutive funding, including the H&M Global Change Award 2025, RAE Enterprise Fellowship, and IUK.
