Age and underlying health conditions can reduce the body’s ability to heal. When healing fails after surgery, it can cause lasting pain, delay recovery and require further operations. The problem is particularly acute in spinal fusion, where one in seven patients’ bones fail to fuse within 12 months.

The Opportunity

Embed Biotech uses bioelectronic medicine to amplify the body’s natural healing response, using targeted physical signals rather than drugs or added growth factors. Small enough to be embedded directly into an orthopaedic implant, the technology enables the implant to play an active role in healing. Embed’s lead spinal product is designed to deliver faster, more reliable fusion.

Business Model

Embed will generate revenue by selling premium bioelectronic implants, initially for lumbar spinal fusion, through specialist US distributors. The implants fit existing surgical workflows, reimbursement pathways and instrumentation, enabling adoption. Outsourced manufacturing reduces capital requirements and supports attractive medical-device margins. Future growth will come from expansion into orthopaedic applications.

Competition

Embed has two direct bioelectronics competitors: DirectSync Surgical and Intelligent Implants. It differentiates through a cell-targeted mechanism of action and easier adoption, requiring no disruption to surgical workflows or external charging. The bioelectronic approach could also avoid the costs, manufacturing complexity, handling burden and safety concerns associated with biologic treatments.

Traction

Embed has translated award-winning Imperial research into a surgeon-tested spinal fusion system. Preclinical studies demonstrated two-to-threefold increases in activity associated with bone formation and vascularisation. The technology received the 2026 ISTA HAP Paul Award, while leading US and UK spine surgeons have described the technology as “game-chamging”.
