Miou

Valorising concrete waste for large scale carbon removal and ocean restoration

The Challenge

Current carbon removal technologies are costly, energy intensive, or land constrained, making them difficult to scale. There is currently no widely adopted, cost-effective solution that simultaneously restores ocean alkalinity and diverts industrial waste from landfills.

No existing solution valorises waste concrete, utilises industrial CO2, and produces a marketable output. Current carbon technologies are costly, energy intensive, or land constrained, and none are deployable directly where demolition waste exists.

The Opportunity

Miou converts waste concrete and surplus CO2 into precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), deployed as a mobile unit, processing waste at source.

The Venture

Business Model

Revenue from demolition gate fees and CO2 offtake funds PCC production, undercutting mined limestone. The PCC is sold to pharma clients, whose returns are used to manufacture artificial reef substrate, making reef restoration financially self-sustaining and directly addressing ocean acidification/marine biodiversity loss without the carbon cost of conventional mining.
