Silica Labs

Engineering metamaterials to passively cool infrastructure.

The Challenge

Extreme heat exposes 71% of the world’s working population to excessive temperatures. In hot industrial regions, much of that heat comes through the roof. Metal roofs absorb sunlight and radiate it indoors, and roofs we measured in Tamil Nadu exceeded 63°C. Factories pay twice: active cooling can account for 30% of their electricity costs, and heat erodes productivity and product quality. The ILO projects heat will erase 2.2% of global working hours by 2030, worth $2.4 trillion. The industry’s answer? Fans, air coolers, and air-conditioning, which burn electricity and heat the planet further.

The Opportunity

Silica Shield is a lightweight, flexible passive-cooling sheet that retrofits onto existing metal roofs without fasteners. Our patent-pending metamaterial is inspired by the silica skeletons of algae. Its engineered nanoscale pores reflect over 95% of sunlight while emitting heat through the 8–13 µm atmospheric window directly into space. It also insulates, with ~190× lower thermal conductivity than steel. The result is up to 15°C lower indoor temperatures with zero energy input and a 15-year lifespan. Made from cheap, abundant raw materials, it saves a 2,000 m² factory around $98,000 over its lifetime.

The Venture

Business Model

We are targeting India’s $8 billion addressable market, starting with a $4 billion segment across hot-climate industrial states, beginning in Tamil Nadu. We sell B2B to factory owners at $15/m²: around $30,000 for a typical 2,000 m² roof, with a two-year payback and a 5× lifetime return, versus 1.5× for reflective paint. Our software models each site’s savings before sale and monitors performance remotely after, turning a one-off purchase into an ongoing relationship. As we scale, we will license manufacturing to partners and expand into cold storage, data centres, and agriculture.
